How to write a Google Business Profile post

A Google Business Profile post is a short update that can appear on your listing in Google Search and Maps. A good one tells a customer one useful thing and what to do next.

A simple structure

  1. Lead with the point. The first line or two is what people see first. Say the news, the offer or the event right away.
  2. Add one or two details. Who it is for, what it includes, any limits.
  3. Give a next step. Pick one: a button like Book, Order online, Buy, Learn more, Sign up or Call now.
  4. Add a clear photo. Use a photo you took or own.

How long can it be?

Google's help says post text can be up to 1,500 characters. Shorter is usually easier to read on a phone. A few sentences is plenty.

What to leave out

  • Phone numbers, email addresses and social handles. Google says it may remove posts with unverified contact information. It suggests attaching a Call now button instead.
  • Anything misleading or spammy. Extra characters, repeated text and text that adds no value.
  • Content about regulated goods and services. Google lists industries such as alcohol, tobacco and financial services. Read its policy before posting if that is you.

Which post type?

Use an Update for news, an Offer for a deal with dates, and an Event for something happening on a date. See offer vs event vs update posts.
